For the 1/2 Day Mushing School, every person drives their own dog sled and team of dogs. If you would like to double up and share one sled with another person, then that is also an option. If sharing then you can take turns driving the sled. The second person on a shared sled costs $199. To book for the double-up option, click on the Book Now button for the different ticket options. While incredibly fun and addictive, mushing is a very physical activity; please take your own abilities into consideration. Before heading out on the trail, your guide will give you a comprehensive lesson in the do’s and don’ts of how to handle the dog sled in different conditions, how to communicate with the dogs, and how to pace the team properly.

The minimum age for each sled driver is 16 years of age (Under 18 requires parent/guardian signature). Those under 16 may experience the mushing school if accompanied by a parent or guardian who will be the official driver (tickets are required for each person).

As you can imagine, dog sledding in Alaska is an iconic activity. While we get some reservations up to a year in advance, typically if you book 1-2 months ahead of time then you should be okay. Obvious exceptions to this are any major holidays and the weeks surrounding the start of the Iditarod (early March). The slowest period of the winter is mid-January to mid-February, all other times will generally get booked out.

This tour takes place at a mid-distance champion, top-5 Iditarod kennel in Big Lake. If you are driving yourself from Anchorage, you will head north on the Parks Hwy towards Wasilla. Make sure to stay left at the fork towards Wasilla/Palmer! From there, you drive through Wasilla and continue north. We are approximately an hour and fifteen minutes’ drive from downtown Anchorage, and specific directions and info will also be sent to you at the time of booking your tour. Reservations are required. If you want to cancel less than three days beforehand, a 50% refund will be given. No shows will be charged full price. We also provide a full refund in cases of inclement weather or road conditions and travel delays that affect your trip to Alaska.
